How to have an edge in the modern world?

I had learned to do integrals by various methods shown in a book that my high school physics teacher Mr.Bader had given me.

One day he told me to stay after class."Feynman," he said, "you talk too much and you make too much noise. I know why. You're bored. So I'm going to give you a book. You go up there in the back, in the corner, and study this book, and when you know everything that's in this book, you can talk again."

So every physics class, I paid no attention to what was going on with Pascal's Law or whatever they were doing. I was up in the back with this book: Advanced Calculus, by Woods. Bader knew I had studied Calculus for the Practical Man a little bit, so he gave me the real works - it was for a junior or senior course in college. It had Fourier series, Bessel functions, determinants, elliptic functions - all kinds of wonderful stuff I didn't know anything about.

That book also showed how to differentiate parameters under the integral sign - it's a certain operation. It turns out that's not taught much in the universities; they don't emphasize it. But I caught on how to use that method, and I used that one damn tool again and again. So because I was self-taught using that book, I had peculiar methods of doing integrals.

The result was, when the guys at MIT or Princeton had trouble doing a certain integral, it was because they couldn't do it with the standard methods they had learned in school. If it was contour integration, they would have found it; if it was a simple series expansion, they would have found it. Then I come along and try differentiating under the integral sign, and often it worked. So I got a great reputation for doing integrals, only because my box of tool was different from everybody else's, and they had tries all their tools on it before giving the problem to me.

In Chicago, when I went to gather information on problems they were working on. When the guy was explaining a problem, I said, "why don't you do it by differentiating under the integral sign?". In half and hour he had it solved, and they had been working on it for 3 months!


For all I know Reputation and Time both are of great importance to a men. I've heard cases of this before and some personal experience as well. I believe it's important to spend sometime thinking and reflecting about how can we build a set of toolbox that gives you edge in all areas of your life not just career. This is my attempt to do so. It's important to understand that it's personal, me showing mine or feynman telling his doesn't mean you would be able to relate and apply them in your life, It would be great pleasure if reading this makes you think about how to approch this problem.

Coding error or how deeper understanding helps

I've a colleuge who tried to run code from the youtube tutorial but failed, it was a small repo but error was generic Class Robot has no method from_url. I told him there is no way tutorial doesn't work. I tried it myself and got the same error. Given my computer science background and understanding of git and codebases, I just looked up the code for class in the git repo, in the comments and documentation they had mentioned the use of from_url method but wasn't implemented. So I searched around in the code base and found a file which mentioned other way of doing the same thing, and it worked. I looked back at youtube video comments and found that rolling out older version also works.

  1. you can be little more curious and find easy fixes(like in comments).
  2. Having deeper understanding and being thorough gives you an edge.
